Chinese Name: 绝地武士
English Name: Jedi Spinel
Publisher: Guild Gem Laboratory, USA
Release Date: November 2019
Release Location: Shenzhen, China
I. Definition
"Jedi Spinel" refers to spinels that exhibit a neon-like appearance and strong fluorescence in bright pink to red hues due to a specific combination of trace elements (Figure 1). The name is inspired by the movie Star Wars, where Jedi Knights are warriors who combat dark forces, each wielding a lightsaber. The neon-like visual effect of some high-color, strongly fluorescent spinels resembles the glow of a Jedi's lightsaber. Jedi Spinel, with its unique neon-like visual appeal, holds a significant position in the spinel trade and represents the highest quality rating for pink-to-red spinels by Guild Gem Laboratory.

II. Development History
Guild Gem Laboratory has long focused on the testing of colored gemstones, particularly the enhancement treatment, color grading, and origin determination of emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. In addition, Guild has conducted systematic research on emerging gemstones such as spinel and aquamarine, providing identification and grading services.
Release: In November 2019, Guild Gem Laboratory, based on market demand and years of spinel research, officially launched spinel identification, grading, and origin determination services. Simultaneously, it introduced the commercial name "Jedi Spinel," becoming the first international gem laboratory to conduct systematic research and testing on spinel. This move significantly boosted the popularity of pink-to-red spinels in both domestic and international gemstone markets.
Standardization: In November 2019, Guild Gem Laboratory released the Guild Spinel Identification and Grading Standards, further standardizing "Jedi Spinel" in a scientific manner.
Marketization: Since the introduction of the "Jedi Spinel" commercial name in November 2019, the popularity of spinel in China has steadily risen. Guild Gem Laboratory's spinel sample intake clearly demonstrates the pivotal role of the "Jedi Spinel" name in driving the market's vigorous growth (Figure 2) [7]. Report data shows that after the launch of the "Jedi Spinel" commercial name, spinels rated as "Jedi Spinel" accounted for 86.46% of the total in 2020. "Jedi Spinel" pioneered the use of commercial names for spinels, opening new doors and promoting the development of the spinel market.

III. Evaluation Criteria
Spinel is a gemstone variety with a rich color spectrum, displaying all colors of the spectrum except yellow and green. Among these, pink-to-red spinels hold the highest market value. Guild Gem Laboratory has established a color grading system for pink-to-red spinels based on the three elements of color (hue, saturation, and brightness) (Figure 3). The color grades are as follows:
Vivid: Medium to high saturation, medium to high brightness, with little to no dark areas.
Fancy: Medium saturation, medium brightness, with some dark areas.
Deep: Low to medium saturation, very low brightness, with noticeable dark areas.
Light: Very low saturation, medium to high brightness.

Fluorescence persists regardless of whether the gemstone is cut, as it is an inherent property of the gemstone.
The fluorescence of pink-to-red spinels is divided into five levels (Figure 4):
Exceptional Strong
Very Strong
Strong
Medium
Weak
Figure 4: Fluorescence Grading of Pink-to-Red Spinels
"Jedi Spinel" represents Guild Gem Laboratory's highest quality rating for pink-to-red spinels, typically characterized by the following features:
Usually applicable to spinels from Myanmar, such as those from Mogok, Mansin, and Namya mines.
The color is naturally formed, with no color enhancement treatments.
The color grade reaches Vivid, exhibiting a strong "neon-like" effect with little to no dark areas.
The fluorescence level is Strong, Very Strong, or Exceptional Strong.
Chromium content is significantly higher than iron content.
Spinels that simultaneously achieve Exceptional Strong fluorescence and Vibrant-Brilliance are rated as Exceptional Jedi Spinel, representing the highest quality within the "Jedi Spinel" category (Figure 5).
